Renewable Heat Incentive
What is RHI?
Renewable Heat Incentive, or RHI, is an initiative set up by the government with the aim to encourage more people to invest in renewable technologies. The incentive applies to homeowners, communities and businesses, and provides them with considerable financial incentives. The incentive was put in place in order to help make a significant contribution to the UK’s emission reduction targets by 2020.
In November 2015, the UK government renewed its commitment to the transition to a low carbon economy by confirming a continued budget for the RHI out to 2020/21. Following a series of consultations from March-April 2016, the government finalised a package of reforms to the RHI schemes in December 2016. It was unclear as to when the changes proposed for the RHI scheme will take effect, following the announcement of the General Election.
It has now been decided that the government's raft of changes to its world's first Renewable Heat Incentive will be implemented on September 20, 2017, with the other changes announced in the December 2016 reform being planned to follow later in 2017/2018.
There are two categories to the RHI:

Launched on November 28, 2011, this phase includes charity, commercial, public sector and not-for-profit businesses. It also applies to domestic systems where two or more properties are heated by one biomass boiler. |
This phase was introduced on April 9, 2014 and includes single domestic properties that are heated by one biomass boiler (up to a maximum 45kW). Payments are made over seven years. |
To ensure you are eligible:
- your biomass boiler needs to have been installed after July 15, 2009;
- emission levels need to be less than 30g g/GJ particulates and 150g/Gj nitrogen oxide; and
- if your installation is below 45kW, it must be MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited.
